Brussels Uses Crises to Seize Power from Member States

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán launched a sharp critique of the European Union’s crisis management strategy, accusing Brussels of using emergencies, from the financial crisis to the war in Ukraine, as pretexts to centralize power, hirado.hu reported.
In a Facebook post published over the weekend, PM Orbán argued that despite the transfer of competencies to EU institutions, Brussels has consistently failed to address these challenges effectively and now seeks to use the war as a further excuse to take more money, rights, and decision-making power from member states like Hungary.
Brussels has responded to all the crises that have erupted in recent times, such as the financial crisis fifteen years ago, the migration crisis ten years ago, then COVID, the energy crisis, and now the inflation crisis, by trying to take powers away from member states. Then, of course, it turned out that they could not use these powers and could not handle these crises,”
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on social media.
According to the head of government, the consequences of the financial crisis are still present. Regarding the migration situation, he stated that since decision-making powers have been in Brussels, the situation is worse than ever. Regarding COVID, he noted that “we are all aware of the corruption involved.” Viktor Orbán believes that Brussels’ energy policy has resulted in the EU “taking powers away from member states and energy prices skyrocketing.”
The Prime Minister said that the same applies in the case of the war. As he put it, “the empire-building bureaucrats in Brussels will use it to take even more powers away from the member states and bring them to Brussels. We must not allow Brussels to take even more money from us, take even more powers, take even more loans, citing the war,” he wrote.
He added that this must be opposed because it would be harmful to Hungary.
Brussels is not capable of solving these problems.”
According to Viktor Orbán, the battle of the next year or two will be about the following: “Will Brussels bureaucrats, using the war in Ukraine as an excuse, succeed in taking even more money from Hungarians and other member states, and will they succeed in taking even more rights away from Hungarians and taking them to Brussels? We must not let them decide over our heads!” – reads Mr Orbán’s Facebook post.
