The Budapest Design Week started on Thursday, with over 100 venues in Budapest, Sopron (near the Austrian border) and Pécs (southwestern Hungary), offering temporary exhibitions, workshops, and guided tours for those interested in the creative industries. The event is open until October 20.
At the press event of the festival, Regő Lánszki, national architect and State Secretary for Architecture, said that strengthening the link between architecture and design was a priority. One important step in this direction is that as of 2025, three thousandths of all public investments will have to be spent on works of fine or applied art, with the proviso that the works must be an integral part of the buildings, he stressed.
Zsófia Jakab, Ministerial Commissioner and CEO of the Hungarian Fashion and Design Agency (HFDA), expressed her hope that in the future Budapest Design Week could strengthen the regional role of Hungary and Budapest in the creative industry.
We believe that the programs organized by the agency will contribute to the success and stimulation of the Hungarian creative industry, and we are committed to making the event as professional as possible,”
said Jakab.

In addition to the programs in the capital, Sopron and Pécs will also join the series of events:
the Sopron Design Week event will be organized for the ninth time, while DesignPécs will draw attention to one of the hidden strengths of Baranya County, the local design and creative industries, with its various events,
she said.
As the opening event of the Budapest Design Week, ELLE Decoration magazine presented the EDIDA Hungary awards for the third time, recognizing the most outstanding and inspiring works of the Hungarian design profession. The international EDIDA (ELLE DECO International Design Awards), also known as the Oscars of design, was held in Milan in April this year and rewarded the best in the field for 20 years.
This year’s EDIDA Hungary shortlist was once again selected by renowned experts, who chose works representing the latest trends in the Hungarian and international design scene, with a special focus on sustainability and creative solutions.
360 Design Budapest, the central exhibition of Budapest Design Week, will showcase the best of Hungarian and regional design for the fifth time between October 15 and 20. This year, the exhibition will take place in the former waiting room of the Nyugati Railway Station, Budapest. The exhibition will highlight the role of design in everyday life, while opening the door for designers from the region to showcase their work on the international stage. The event has received several prestigious international awards in recent years, including the Red Dot and A’ Design Award.
Another flagship event of Budapest Design Week is Art Market Budapest, the largest international contemporary art fair in Central and Eastern Europe.
Art Market Budapest will take place on October 17-20 at Millenáris (a Budapest exhibition space) and will showcase the latest contemporary art from over 100 exhibitors from 30 countries.
