Based on booking data from Szallas.hu, the most popular cities for domestic travel in autumn are Budapest, Eger (northern Hungary), and Pécs (southern Transdanubia). Most people plan a two-night stay, and about one-third of bookings are for hotels. Couples mainly plan trips for September, while families are already showing significant interest in the long weekend of October 23, and the autumn break.
At the regional level, northern Hungary is the most popular, with one-fifth of bookings registered there, followed by Lake Balaton with 15%, while Budapest and its catchment area, as well as Western Transdanubia, account for 13-13%. Most travelers spend one to two nights at their destination, with longer stays of four nights being relatively rare.

When it comes to bookings, convenience services are in the spotlight during the fall season: 32% of guests choose hotels, 27% choose apartments, 24% choose guesthouses, 13% choose bed and breakfasts, and the remaining 4% choose other types of accommodation. Approximately one in three guests also requests meals, most often breakfast or half board. Three- and four-star hotels are the most popular, and the majority of bookings are under 170,000 forints (around 425 euros).

The most popular programs in the fall are spas, castles, and zoos, including the Nyíregyháza Zoo (northern Hungary), the Sárvár Spa and Wellness Center, the Eger Castle, and the Gyula Castle Spa.

“In the fall, guests consciously seek destinations where accommodation is accompanied by meaningful programs,” said Zsolt Szabó, head of Programs and Attractions at Szallas.hu.

The long weekend of October 23 is of particular interest, especially among family travelers. Eger, Gyula (southern Great Plain), Budapest, and Hévíz (western Transdanubia) are the most popular destinations during the school break.
