The fleet of modern, low-floor trams in Budapest continues to expand: the Budapest Transport Center (Budapesti Közlekedési Központ -BKK) and the Supervisory Authority have signed a support agreement that will provide EU funding for the new CAF trams.
BKK has ordered a total of 51 trams from the Spanish manufacturer so far. Of these, 19 are already in service, two will soon be put into service, and the last units of the entire package are expected to arrive by the end of 2026.
Thanks to the new, barrier-free and air-conditioned trams, the proportion of low-floor trams in Budapest could rise from 30 percent to over 40 percent.
The modern vehicles will primarily operate on lines 1, 3, 17, 19, 42, 50, 56, 56A, and 61.
In the future, new trams may also be introduced on lines 2, 23, 24, 62, 14, and 69, but this would require further infrastructure development (for instance, expansion of the power supply and reconstruction of terminal stations). However, the financing of these projects has not yet been settled.
