The world’s first LEGO tramway on a fixed track was unveiled in Budapest and is now on display at Deák Ferenc Square.
Built using 1.8 million LEGO bricks, the six-ton, 11.5-meter-long tram was constructed by 90 builders in over 6,800 hours. Designed by master builder Balázs Dóczi, the tram is a remarkable feat of craftsmanship. Although the tramway will not carry passengers, it was towed by two shunting engines to its place of exhibition where visitors can admire it and even place their own LEGO cubes on the base plates beneath the tram.
At the press event, Mayor Gergely Karácsony highlighted the importance of yellow trams to “Budapest-ness” and noted that the LEGO tram also draws attention to the role of public and sustainable transport.
He emphasized that toys like LEGO contribute to society by encouraging creativity and engagement.
Tibor Bolla, CEO of BKV Zrt. (Budapest Transit Company), expressed pride in the collaboration with LEGO Hungária Ltd., adding that the tram symbolizes 137 years of tram transport in Budapest, which began in November 1887. The life-size LEGO tram will be on display for a month.
Katalin Walter, CEO of BKK (Center for Budapest Transport), stressed that trams are an essential part of Budapest’s daily life, offering environmentally friendly, safe, and reliable transport. She also mentioned ongoing efforts to modernize the tram network.
Judit Váraljai-Sipos, Managing Director of LEGO Hungária Ltd., noted that the LEGO tramway marks a milestone as the first life-size LEGO vehicle to move on a fixed track. She encouraged parents to rediscover the joy of play and its educational benefits.
