Budapest’s Chimney Cake Debuts with Exotic Flavors

The chimney cake is experiencing a renaissance among tourists, with most foreigners heading to Budapest planning in advance to taste the legendary sweet-treat. On Easter Sunday, April 20, Budapest’s chimney cake will make its debut at St. Stephen’s Basilica, featuring unusual ingredients, reported Világgazdaság.

“For us, the creators, the responsibility is huge,” said Norbert Korolovszki, founder of Kürtős Legenda and the mastermind behind Budapest’s chimney cake. “There are so many low-quality versions out there being overly sweet, dense, having inedible dough, and baked in electric ovens. There’s a massive gap between the small-town stalls, window buffets, copycat vendors, and the ‘orange-aproned love’ we stand for.”

Korolovszki emphasized that

any tourist boarding a plane to Hungary has likely already included chimney cake on their must-try list.

That’s why the team at Kürtős Legenda – who have been making chimney cakes for 13 years – is committed to offering the very best version, one that lives up to Budapest’s reputation.

Budapest’s chimney cake reflects the national colors while incorporating Unicum, Hungary’s most famous drink. It also includes a bit of passion fruit ice cream and blueberries, giving it a summery and refreshing twist.

The traditional chimney cake, like the ones our grandmothers used to make, was made from simple leavened dough and prepared entirely by hand. “We still make it by hand today and bake it over open coals, just like back in the day,” Korolovszki explained. They are committed to tradition in other ways, too – for instance, they let the dough rest for at least six hours before baking.

“When we visit Transylvania, we never skip tasting some local blueberries. For us, that is also a core part of the tradition. That is why we wanted to include this element in Budapest’s chimney cake as well,” he said.

Budapest’s chimney cake is just like the city itself: colorful, green, lively, cosmopolitan.

Kürtős Legenda’s goal is to restore the chimney cake’s status as a festive treat. By choosing a location right next to the Basilica, they also hope to restore the dignity that the traditional chimney cake has lost in recent times, Korolovszki concluded.

The new summer dessert of Budapest will be available until the end of September.
