Bulgaria Continues to Guarantee Gas Transit to Hungary

Bulgaria will continue to provide natural gas transit to Hungary, that is extremely important, as the TurkStream pipeline is now the main route for the country’s gas supply, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Tuesday after talks with his new Bulgarian counterpart.

The Minister wrote in Facebook post that after many months of coalition talks in Bulgaria, there is hope that the country will once again have a stable government. This is also in Hungary’s interest, as bilateral cooperation is needed on a number of strategically important issues, he added. He held a telephone conversation earlier in the day with his new Bulgarian counterpart in office, Georg Georgiev, with whom he confirmed their mutual commitment to further develop bilateral relations.

Hungary supported Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area, for which my colleague expressed his thanks. Hungary also supports Bulgaria’s accession to the OECD and we have great respect for the Bulgarian community in Hungary,”

said Péter Szijjártó.

Mr Szijjártó also noted that they agreed to continue the fight against illegal immigration and that it is in the interest of Central Europe to have peace in the region as soon as possible.

He stressed that Hungary’s natural gas supply is now largely ensured by the TurkStream pipeline, thus it is of particular importance that the countries along this pipeline continue to guarantee the continuity of supply.

My new Bulgarian counterpart assured me that Bulgaria will continue to act as a reliable transit country, which I welcome with satisfaction, especially in view of the physical, political and financial attacks on the pipeline in the recent past,”

he said.
