Children’s Railway to Celebrate Anniversary with Nostalgia Locomotives

On Saturday, April 12, the Budapest Children’s Railway will celebrate the 77th anniversary of its foundation with a day of fun and exciting activities at the Hűvösvölgy depot and the reception park below the station.
Construction of the line of the Children’s Railway was started 77 years ago, on April 11, 1948, on Széchenyi Hill, and this is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of April as part of the Narrow-gauge Railway Day, said MÁV Zrt. (Hungarian state railways company) in a statement.

On Saturday, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Children’s Railway’s depot in Hűvösvölgy (neighborhood in the 2nd District of Budapest), and in the reception park under the station.
Children attending the event will be able to perform the tasks of a ticket inspector with real railway equipment and try on the uniform.
A LEGO table and an occasional history exhibition will be on display in the parlor cars.
There will also be vehicle exhibits. Visitors will be able to see inside and out a steam locomotive on display, and children will have the chance to board a traditional Mk45 diesel locomotive, a C50 small locomotive and a motor carriage from Lillafüred (part of Miskolc, northern Hungary), as well as try out a draisine.
The Children’s Railway’s fleet of trains, freight wagons and the Mk49 locomotive, that are nowadays almost never seen in traffic, will also be lined up.

In addition to the trains, the reception park below the Hűvösvölgy station will also have a fleet of nostalgic buses on display: in addition to the Volán Ikarus, there will be a BKV Ikarus 556 bus and two Ikarus 280 articulated buses exhibited.
Children’s Railway trains will run between Hűvösvölgy and Széchenyihegy in accordance with the usual spring timetable:
Conventional passenger trains will depart every 40-50 minutes from the two terminals.
The locomotives on display on the occasion will not only be lined up at the rail yard, but will also be used for trial runs between Hűvösvölgy and Szépjuhászné stations at a special fare.
