Danube Folk Dances Come Alive at the National Theater

The “Danube Ballads” will be performed by the Danube Art Ensemble at the National Theater, Budapest, on Saturday, March 14, at the opening of the Jelen/Lét festival.

The production, showcasing the dances and songs of the peoples living along the Danube and featuring the StEfrem male choir, will be performed on March 14 at 7 p.m., says a press release by the ensemble.

Organized by the Hungarian Serbian Theater, the Jelen/Lét festival will take place between March 14 and March 22.

The opening production will focus on the Danube, a river that connects peoples from the Black Forest to the Black Sea, and has been a witness to historical eras and a shaper of destinies.

As they emphasize, the Danube occupies a special place in Hungarian national memory: it is a symbol of purity, preservation, and rebirth. This has inspired artists, poets, and composers for centuries. The performance explores this complex layer of meaning through dance, music, and visuals.

The choreography draws on the traditions of the peoples living along the Danube, evoking the characteristic movements, dramatic songs, and emotional richness of the regions.

The StEfrem male choir also contributes to the special atmosphere, with the combination of vocal sounds and dynamic dance images creating a powerful theatrical world.
