Domestic Beer Industry’s Largest Investment Reaches Spectacular Phase

The Dreher Brewery’s fermentation process will be completely revamped, for which 35 huge containers have already been transported from Germany via the Danube, Építészfórum reports. The underground passages of the 13th-century limestone quarry located beneath the Budapest brewery had to be reinforced so that construction of the new plant could begin.

In October and the first half of November, the fermentation and maturation tanks were transported at night on public roads from the Csepel freight port to the factory in Kőbánya, District X in Budapest.

As the portal writes, the largest parts, measuring 20 to 22 meters in length, had to be manufactured without insulation, as this was the only way to obtain permission to transport “oversized loads.” The outer insulation layer will therefore be applied on site at the construction site in a specially built hall with the help of an international team of experts.

One of the most critical steps in beer production is fermentation after brewing, during which yeast converts the sugars contained in the wort into alcohol and carbon dioxide – this essentially determines the taste, smell, and carbon dioxide content of the beer. For this reason, the current investment is of crucial importance for Dreher: in addition to modern buildings and 300-cubic-meter tanks, new technologies are also being used.

In addition to the fermentation plant, a new energy center is also being built, that will later supply the entire production process and improve the efficiency of water and energy consumption.

We are making the largest investment in the domestic beer industry in Budapest to date without stopping production. The complexity of our project becomes clear when you consider that we had to reinforce 800-year-old tunnels in order to lift the tanks into place with a 500-ton crane,”

said András Rácz, Director of Integrated Supply Chains at Dreher Breweries, about the project.

Asahi Europe & International has increased the efficiency of the Kőbánya plant and Dreher’s export capacity with numerous developments in recent years: the compressors and filter systems were replaced at a cost of 4.6 billion forints (12 million euros), followed by the installation of a new production line for aluminum cans at a cost of 7 billion forints (18 million euros). The first phase of the mega-project, costing 30 billion forints (79 million euros) and also financed entirely from the company’s own resources, is planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
