Sensirion, a Swiss corporation has built a unique, world-class factory in Hungary, which is already operational and uses almost no water. The newly inaugurated facility will produce sensors for medical, automotive, and refrigeration technologies. It is also collaborating with educational institutions in Debrecen as part of its development strategy, reported Világgazdaság.
Swiss company Sensirion Holding AG has officially opened its latest factory in Debrecen, eastern Hungary. According to Mayor László Papp, the project cost 4.5 billion forints (11 million euros). The facility includes a 7,000-square-meter high-tech production hall and logistics center, developed with the involvement of Hungarian firms like Szinorg Universal Zrt. and the Xanga Group.
The plant, which manufactures medical, automotive, and U.S. market-bound refrigeration sensors, is nearly completely free from fossil energy sources.
It is powered by geothermal energy, heat recovery systems, energy storage units, and solar panels. Sensirion maintains active partnerships with the Debrecen Vocational Training Center and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen, reports Haon.
László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen posted on Facebook that after opening its first factory in Debrecen in 2021, Sensirion has now inaugurated a second, 7,000-square-meter high-tech production hall and logistics center. He emphasized that this expansion clearly shows that the Swiss-based company is committed to long-term investment in the city.
The new facility is not just another manufacturing unit, but further proof that Debrecen remains one of Hungary’s most competitive, livable, and rapidly developing cities,”
said the Mayor.
Jean-François Paroz, Switzerland’s ambassador to Hungary, stated that Debrecen may participate in a project to modernize the city’s district heating system using existing thermal wells. This would involve geothermal energy, potentially making heating in the city gas-free in the long term. He referred to the investment as “a great example of Swiss-Hungarian collaboration driving prosperity and innovation in Europe”.
Franziska Brem, Sensirion’s Vice President of Operations, described the Debrecen plant as a key strategic hub for the company, emphasizing that investments have been made not only in the infrastructure and technology but also in the local workforce.
István Herdon, CEO of the Xanga Investment & Development Group, spoke about their role in the project, explaining that they lease turnkey facilities—manufacturing, logistics, and service halls—to tenants, who then install their own equipment and use the space with support from the local skilled labor force.
Sensirion represents the type of industry we always refer to when we talk about attracting manufacturing companies with modern technology, high added value, and innovation-driven production,”
emphasized the CEO in the company’s Facebook post. He added that sensors are already part of our daily lives and will become even more integrated in the future, “they are the technology of tomorrow”.
Imre Török, Director of Maintenance and Infrastructure at Sensirion Hungary Kft., shared details about the factory’s eco-friendly operations. Its energy needs are met with 80 ground probes and a heat pump system capable of nearly 1 megawatt of heating and cooling.
A solar power plant on-site covers 25% of the annual electricity demand with a peak output of 200 kilowatts.
The factory also uses a minimal amount of water, operating with a closed, monitored system that only allows wastewater to return to the city network after treatment and inspection.
