Electricity Import at Its Lowest since 2012

In April, the share of electricity imports remained below 10 percent, the Ministry of Energy announced on Facebook. Imports accounted for only 9.9 percent of domestic gross electricity consumption in the previous month, the lowest import share since the beginning of 2012.

The second-best month in the past decade was September 2023, with a figure at over 15 percent. The fourth month of last year was slightly higher, at 15.4 percent. In April 2024 and 2025, gross electricity sales were almost identical (3,329 gigawatt hours and 3,351 gigawatt hours), they added, noting that the more favorable import ratio was due to a significant increase in Hungarian production (from 2,816 to 3,020 gigawatt hours).

They highlighted that Hungary had a positive import balance on five days in April. May started similarly, with more electricity exported than imported in the first three days of the month.

Thanks to its enormous installed capacity and the Paks units, the country is increasingly able to meet its domestic demand from clean, carbon-free sources, and it also has more and more to export.

With the expansion of energy storage capacities, solar power production, which peaks at midday, can be stored for use in the evening, when consumption spikes and electricity prices soar. Thanks to government support, 500 megawatts of capacity could be built from industrial energy storage facilities as early as next year, according to the Facebook post by the Ministry of Energy.
