Omišalj oil terminal
An eleven-month series of long-term capacity tests for the Adria oil pipeline will begin on Wednesday, Hungarian oil company MOL announced.
Experts will examine the pipeline’s constant, sustainable, and long-term transport performance in different seasons, under different weather conditions, and with various types of oil. In the initial phases of the test series, the infrastructure will not yet be operating at full capacity, with tests at a capacity of 40,000 tons per day expected to be possible in the fall. In addition, the logistics of Croatian oil transportation will be examined: in addition to the pipeline, port capacities, storage capacities, and oil blending capacities will also be tested.
MOL invited American specialists to conduct the examinations, while Janaf, the operator of the Adria pipeline, invited German experts.
MOL added that it is in everyone’s interest that “after contradictory tests and controversial statements, the facts finally speak for themselves.”
According to the statement, the Croatian side estimates the annual capacity of the Adria pipeline at 11 to 15 million tons, although it has never transported more than 2.2 million tons to date. MOL welcomes the start of professional testing, not least because it will enable clarification by early 2027 of what is required for the Adria pipeline to finally become a fully-fledged route.
At the same time, the Hungarian company announced that
MOL still does not have a valid supply contract for 2026,
which exacerbates the supply problems due to the associated legal uncertainty.
Together with its Slovak subsidiary Slovnaft, they have been waiting for two weeks for a statement on whether Janaf will allow unsanctioned Russian oil deliveries that comply with international regulations to pass through. The Croatian side has already received approval from the Hungarian and Slovakian authorities, reads the statement.
