EU Aware of Human Rights Abuses in Ukraine, Will Address Them Only if Budapest Budges on EU Membership

In addition to the disenfranchisement of national minorities in Ukraine, the European Commission is also turning a blind eye to violations of fundamental human rights, according to Viktória Ferenc, Member of the European Parliament for Fidesz-KDNP. At the end of last year, the parliamentary group submitted a question to the European Commission regarding the serious human rights violations in connection with the mobilization in Ukraine.

In her statement, Viktória Ferenc emphasized that “recruitment offices in Ukraine are abusing their power and treating citizens unlawfully and inhumanely.” For this reason, the Fidesz-KDNP group in the European Parliament submitted a question to the European Commission at the end of last year regarding the serious violations of law in connection with the mobilization in Ukraine. As long as the rights of Hungarians in the Carpathian region and human rights are being violated, Ukraine cannot progress further on its path to EU accession, Viktória Ferenc made clear.

The MEP stated that Marta Kos, the EU Commissioner responsible for enlargement, acknowledged in her response that the European Commission was aware of the violations of rights.

This means that Ukraine is dictating the rules: respect for human rights is not a prerequisite for opening the first chapter of accession negotiations, but rather the opposite, with attempts being made to remedy the violations of rights retrospectively, pointed out the Fidesz politician. This logic contradicts the fundamental values of the EU and raises concerns about the fairness and credibility of the accession process, she explained.

“Together with my colleagues, we are looking for an answer to the question of how the European Commission monitors human rights violations during the accession negotiations with Ukraine. Whether it keeps records of the measures it takes to prevent them and how this affects the opening of the negotiation chapters with Ukraine,” she emphasized, adding that all this must be clarified.

The issues affecting the Hungarian community in the Carpathian region, including the cases of the students of Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education and the circumstances surrounding the death of József Sebestyén, are just a few examples of the thousands of cases of rights violations that have also been recognized by the Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner and which clearly indicate that there are serious, systemic problems in the field of human rights in Ukraine, the MEP emphasized.

In conclusion, she pointed out that, in addition to the disenfranchisement of national minorities in Ukraine, the European Commission is also turning a blind eye to violations of fundamental human rights.

This is further proof that the left-liberal leadership of the European Union is not focused on the interests of the Ukrainian people, but rather serves the government in Kyiv and pursues its own geopolitical interests,

all while disregarding the fundamental values and norms of the Union, including the Copenhagen criteria required for EU accession. This is unacceptable,” concluded Viktória Ferenc.

The fact that the European Commission, although aware of its existence, is not addressing the disenfranchisement of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine raises the suspicion that the EU is blackmailing Hungary and will only address the violation of the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia if Viktor Orbán agrees to Ukraine’s EU membership.

As Hungary Today reported, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sharply criticized the European Union’s current financial and enlargement strategy after the recent EU special summit in Brussels. In a press conference, he clearly rejected Ukraine’s hopes of accession for the next few decades. In response to recent verbal attacks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he made it clear that Hungary, under his leadership and beyond, would not give the green light for the next hundred years.
