EU-U.S. Deal ‘Proof’ of EU Leadership Failure, Says FM Szijjártó

The weekend customs agreement between the European Union and the United States is yet another piece of evidence that a leadership change in Brussels is urgently needed, as this agreement could have been reached much earlier — commented Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Monday on Facebook.

In his latest post, the minister wrote that the Sunday meeting in Scotland between U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is further proof of the urgent need for a leadership change in Brussels.

“The von der Leyen-led Commission has caused serious damage to the European economy over the past years, further exacerbated by its disastrous handling of customs matters,”

he emphasized.

Not only has the “world’s biggest single market” negotiated a worse deal than “basket case Brexit Britain”, VDL has cemented Europe’s energy dependence with enormous payments to the US.

“The European Commission should have reduced the fourfold tariffs against the United States back in January, which would have prevented another major blow to the European economy,” he added.

PM Viktor Orbán also reacted to the deal saying in Harcosok Órája (Hour of Fighters) programme that, this was not an agreement —

Donald Trump “had Ursula von der Leyen for breakfast,” as the U.S. President is a more influential politician and a far better negotiator. As a result, it was clearly the will of America that prevailed in the negotiations,

Politicians of other major European Parties such as AfD’s Alice Weidel also expressed her disapproval of the deal, calling it a – “slap in the face for European consumers and producers” – on X.
