EUFOR Althea Exercise Demonstrates Hungary’s Military Skills

In Sarajevo, soldiers of the EUFOR Althea mission demonstrated their capabilities under Hungarian command in a spectacular exercise attended by Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and General Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the General Staff, reports Magyar Nemzet.
The exercise, showcasing real scenarios, involved violent crowd, suicide bombers, and rescue operations. Soldiers rescued a protected person from a building simulation, while Hungarian H145M helicopters carried out evacuations. An armed crowd was contained by specially trained soldiers and helicopters. The exercise also featured the rescue of an injured peacekeeper, demonstrating the capacity for MEDEVAC operations, supported by international forces. Additionally, suicide bombers were thwarted by the guard, and bomb disposal units neutralized explosives.
General Böröndi emphasized the significance of the Western Balkans for Hungary’s national security:
the stability and peace of the Western Balkans is of paramount national security and military interest to Hungary.”
He also praised the multinational cooperation within EUFOR, with troops from Hungary, Austria, Türkiye, Romania, Greece, and Italy working seamlessly together despite language and technical differences.
The demonstration underscored Hungary’s growing military capabilities.
We now have helicopter, medical, and artillery capabilities that were not present before, all thanks to the development of the Hungarian Defence Forces,” stated General Böröndi.
Major General László Sticz, EUFOR’s commander, highlighted Hungary’s leadership role in EUFOR, marking the first year in over a decade that Hungary has taken command of the operation.
The exercise proved the effectiveness of Hungary’s peacekeeping capabilities and international collaboration, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining stability in the region.
