Foreign Minister Calls for US-Russian Dialogue to Enhance Global Security

In New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó urged UN Secretary-General António Guterres to facilitate negotiations between the United States and Russia.

Following their meeting, Minister Szijjártó expressed concern over the failure of major global powers to communicate, stating that “the inability or unwillingness of the major players in world politics to talk to each other poses an extraordinary risk to global security today.” He warned that this situation risks dividing the world into blocs again, potentially leading to a “nightmare of the Cold War, which we must avoid.”

Péter Szijjártó highlighted the ongoing war in Ukraine, noting, “the world has been living in the shadow of the war in Ukraine for nearly a thousand days,” emphasizing that without dialogue between the US and Russia, resolving the conflict will be impossible.

He called for the UN to return to its founding principles, including acting as a platform for dialogue among countries in conflict, regardless of their relations.

The Foreign Minister reminded the audience that the UN was not established as a “club of like-minded countries.” The politician concluded by asserting that the UN’s role has never been more crucial for Hungary, stating, “the framework of the UN could offer a chance to initiate a US-Russian dialogue, which could bring new hope for global security and, within that, for Central Europe.”
