A man attacked former Foreign Minister of the Antall government, Géza Jeszenszky and his wife in the doorway of a downtown apartment building in Budapest on Sunday afternoon, where he struck the elderly couple with a hammer. As a result of the attack, the former Minister was in critical condition and underwent surgery, while his wife suffered minor injuries, the Budapest Police Headquarters reported on police.hu on Monday.
Based on reports, the attacker, disguised with a cap, gloves, and a medical mask, fled the scene when a waiter from a nearby restaurant rushed to help the victims. Despite the injuries he sustained while helping, the waiter followed the attacker and called 112. According to the information provided, patrol officers from the Standby Police Force on duty nearby apprehended the suspected perpetrator at Fővám Square.

In addition to the hammer used in the attack, a screwdriver, a jar filled with gasoline and a lighter were also found on the 70-year-old man. Ferenc G. was questioned at the Budapest Police Headquarters’ Homicide Division on suspicion of premeditated attempted murder and aggravated assault.
According to the suspect’s confession, he did not know who he was attacking and chose his victims at random, driven by an inexplicable feeling. He said that he did not intend to use the gasoline and lighter for the attack, but wanted to use them later to kill himself.
Budapest investigators took the man into custody and initiated his arrest. The investigation, conducted with the involvement of a psychiatric expert, is looking into whether the suspect may have been involved in the 2023 attack on the former minister, according to a police statement.
According to press reports, Géza Jeszenszky, the victim of the attack, underwent surgery and told Indexthat he was feeling better.
