German Expat in Hungary Leaves EUR 700,000 to Anti-Immigration AfD Party

A German citizen who lived in the Hungarian spa town of Hévíz (near Lake Balaton) has bequeathed his entire fortune to the conservative Alternative for Germany (AfD), marking yet another substantial windfall for the party.

Der Spiegel, referencing the AfD’s latest financial statement, states that Wolfgang Karl Quader, last registered in Hévíz, named the party as the sole heir to his estate, that is estimated at around EUR 700,000.

Little is known about the identity of the testator so far. The AfD’s treasurer confirmed that he was a German citizen who died in Hungary.

It can be assumed that he belonged to that group of Germans who turned their backs on the Federal Republic to start a new life in Hungary – often on the grounds that everyday life in Germany had become unlivable due to migration policy.

Whether the inheritance consists of cash, real estate or securities is currently unclear, as the probate proceedings have not yet been fully completed.

It is not an isolated occurrence, writes Der Spiegel, as the party led by Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla recorded an unusual number of bequests in 2024:

  • Munich: A taxi company owner left the party EUR 432,000.
  • Bavaria: Another supporter bequeathed over EUR 570,000 to the AfD.
  • Augsburg: One donor even left a sum of more than EUR 1 million.

In addition to these inheritances, the AfD was able to collect around €8 million in donations in 2024.

This brought the party’s total assets above the €40 million mark for the first time.

At the same time, membership grew to over 51,000 by the end of 2024.

Inheritances to political parties in Germany are legal as long as they comply with the transparency rules of the Political Parties Act. These funds enable the AfD to significantly expand its financial scope for future election campaigns at the state and federal levels.
