Nothing demonstrates the total failure of the political green movement as acutely as the recent hate-campaign against the Christian church, plastered around public spaces in Budapest. The deeply flawed political circus came courtesy of Hungary’s increasingly desperate and irrelevant far-left Green Party/Dialogue (Zöldek/Párbeszéd).
People going about their work in Central Budapest near the Széll Kálmán Square tube station were looking on in disbelief as posters insinuating Christian priests being involved in pedophilia, being depicted as evil psychopaths and corrupt loan-sharks were unveiled on the square. Offensive inscriptions mocking Christian doctrine, obscene images such as a priest suggestively holding a banana in his hand, or ones depicted with wads of cash. Inscriptions have detailed some of the sad child abuse cases in a way as if the entire christian church, community was involved in the perpetration or cover-up of these crimes. Direct allusions were made to the church’s alleged total subservience to the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and involvement in profiteering.

These images, reminiscent of the caricatures used in 1930s anti-Jewish hate campaigns, instilled fear and incited hatred towards the Christian community as a whole. The matters were made worse by the fact the displayed images were not a work of a single deranged individual, but those of a well-financed political movement trying to exploit individual cases of child abuse for their own political gain. Behind the despicable hate-campaign is Richárd Barabás, a failed actor, LGBTQ activist, well known (only) for his provocations against the church. Earlier this year he suggested that one of the capital’s historic churches should have the rainbow colors of the Pride flag projected onto its walls, an idea quickly vetoed by responsible adults.

To our question, whether the campaign does not constitute incitement to hate towards a community, Budapest II. and III. district police have told us that “the posters captured in the photographs do not contain any specific statements inciting violence or hatred. The content of the posters is not likely to stir up passions to such an extent that it would lead to a disruption of social order and peace, and thus to the direct possibility of specific violent crimes being committed”. Not yet anyway, albeit examples from Western-Europe and North America tell a different story. Churches are going up in flames, priests are attacked, churches ransacked and believers harassed. Not to mention historic examples, where the verbal or visual stigmatization and dehumanization of certain communities has lead to violence and genocide.

The police’s hands are tied though. It is simply a matter of political climate. There is a political open season against Christians in Europe, slander, ridicule or humiliation are all tolerated under the banner of free speech. The double-standards are tangible though: should this campaign have been directed against any other world-religion other than Christianity, the posters would have been removed within minutes even in Hungary. Christianity apparently does not merit the same protections.
Most people who stopped by and shook their head in disbelief over the vile images and inflammatory texts did not realize that they are looking at the Hungarian branch of a global movement that has degenerated from an environmental agenda into political and ideological extremism that has nothing to offer but hate and division. If in Hungary we would happen to have masses of imported religious fundamentalists to march along through our streets, no doubt they would do so just like their Western counterparts.
The Green movement has hit rock bottom throughout the globe by joining far-left political causes. Abandoning even the semblance of caring for the environment they now march hand-in-hand with groups openly calling for jihad in Western cities. The Greta Thunbergs, who have given up on the Amazonian rain forest or starving polar bears, and are now interested in radical identity politics, attacking national identity or joining Islamist movements instead.

The Hungarian Greens are desperate for attention as they keep slipping in polls, now polling just above 1%, well below the parliamentary threshold. Their numbers are not so much a reflection of the popularity of conservative political parties in Hungary. Instead, their voting segment has been devoured by the country’s main opposition party, Tisza, lead by yet another off-the-shelf foreign-sponsored European anti-Orbán politician, a proxy puppet nurtured by Germany’s migration obsessed CDU party.
This sort of anti-Christian hate that occasionally rears its ugly head in Anglo-Saxon countries around the world, has clearly no mass support in Hungary. Yet its public dissemination for political gain, and the fact that it can enjoy impunity under the law, is a sign that this imported nihilistic ideology has been given the green light to do its destructive work in society in order to break down our moral and mental defenses. This has little to do with the question of freedom of speech. The issue is rather about where a society’s tolerance should be drawn in face of cynical attempts to destroy the fabric of cohesion, spirit of community and tradition.

“Truth, humanity, love”, read the words at the bottom of the Greens’ Orwellian hate-posters. Just like pedophiles are now called “minor attracted persons”, terrorists “freedom fighter”, abortion “family planning”, or child genital mutilation “gender-affirming care”. And in similar fashion what was brown once, then red, is now called green. They all start with satirical images, but often end up with mass graves.
