“The government is joining forces with Miskolc on the revitalization of the Diósgyőr Steel Works, as the facility could be a valuable gold reserve for Hungarian industry,” Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Friday in Miskolc. He said that consultations will be launched in the city regarding the developments.
The minister stated on site that Diósgyőr Steel Works could be a very important reserve for Hungarian industry, as up to 15,000 people worked there at peak times. “Diósgyőr Steel Works was one of the main players in the Hungarian economy and Hungarian industry, and now is the time to start developing this area and putting it to good use. This requires very close cooperation between the city and the government,” Péter Szijjártó emphasized.
“We have provided another six billion forints (15.9 million euros) to Miskolc so that they can buy back as much of the Diósgyőr Steel Works site as possible, so that as much of the former steelworks as possible becomes the property of the city of Miskolc, and then we can start thinking about development, but of course the best development is what the locals want,” he added.
Péter Szijjártó announced that
consultations will begin in the city on March 2, during which local residents will be able to express their opinions, which will then be implemented jointly.
“The fact is that the industries of the 21st century, which are based on information technology, artificial intelligence, and therefore absolutely innovative intellectual activities, could find a great home here,” he emphasized.
“Therefore, obviously, we first need to heal this scar on the city’s urban landscape, make city life easier, so that people do not have to go around it on the right or left, and we need to establish modern economic activities here, which will probably have nothing to do with heavy industry. We will work on this together in the coming period. I ask the people of Miskolc to help us with this work,” said Szijjártó.
