On Monday in Budapest, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, refuted reports that US President Donald Trump had called on Hungary to stop buying Russian crude oil.

“Of course, there was no such message, not even anything close to it,” the Minister emphasized on Hour of Fighters (Harcosok Órája).

According to FM Szijjártó, Hungary and Slovakia belong to a group of European countries that openly purchase Russian crude oil in a manner determined by their infrastructure.

Due to its infrastructure and physical reality, Hungary can only operate safely in terms of energy if the Druzhba oil pipeline is operational,”

he explained.

The Minister also rejected steps aimed at escalating the war and criticized the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen:

The President of the European Commission promises energy purchases to the American president, investments, and soldiers — yet the EU cannot buy energy, make investments, or field an army.”

FM Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary strongly opposes Ukraine’s accession to the EU and the country’s involvement in the war.

“If the question is who is the easiest to drag into a war, then obviously geographical proximity matters, and that is why we must constantly fight against being dragged into war,” he added.
