Hungary is interested in EU enlargement, and this applies above all to Türkiye’s future EU membership, emphasized László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly, after receiving his Turkish counterpart on Monday.

In a press statement following talks with Numan Kurtulmus, President of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, László Kövér said that

the EU may need Türkiye even more than Türkiye needs EU membership, whether in terms of energy security, illegal migration or regional security issues.

The Hungarian Assembly Speaker noted: “Hungary and Türkiye are both interested in a multipolar, peaceful world system based on trade, rather than a division of the world into blocs.” He added that in this regard, Türkiye’s role in the so-called middle corridor connecting Asia and Europe is decisive and irreplaceable.

László Kövér promised his Turkish counterpart that they could continue to count on the Hungarian government to do everything in its power to further strengthen the priority strategic partnership and fill it with content in as many areas as possible.

He praised the intensity of economic relations between the two countries, emphasizing that the Hungarian government’s goal is to achieve $6 billion in trade turnover. He indicated that forecasts show a realistic chance of reaching $5 billion by the end of the year. He welcomed Turkish investments in Hungary and Hungarian capital investments in Türkiye, highlighting the defense industry cooperation between the two countries, which he believes will contribute to the revival of the Hungarian military industry.

Numan Kurtulmus, Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, described Hungarian-Turkish relations as exemplary, emphasizing that the two countries have strong ties in all areas and are constantly developing their existing cooperation, whether in the fields of energy, defense industry, education, or culture.

He recalled that an informal meeting of the Organization of Turkic States was held in Budapest this year and thanked Hungary for supporting Tükiye’s EU membership during its EU Presidency.

He noted that

from a security perspective, it would be a huge contribution if a country as large as Türkiye were to become a member of the European Union.

Prior to their press statements, the Hungarian and Turkish assembly speakers signed a cooperation agreement on supporting bilateral relations, sharing parliamentary experiences and promoting Türkiye’s accession to the European Union.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also received Numan Kurtulmus on Monday. The meeting focused on bilateral relations between the two countries and opportunities for cooperation, as well as regional and global issues. The Prime Minister wrote on X: “We emphasized the importance of our cooperation and discussed our shared efforts within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States.”
