In line with last week’s announcement, the government is launching a national consultation on the Hungarian tax system, Gergely Gulyás, head of the Prime Minister’s Office, said on Wednesday in Budapest at the Government Information briefing.
Minister Gergely Gulyás emphasized that the question of the tax system is a very important public debate, therefore, it is important to clarify whether Hungarian voters continue to support a low, flat-rate personal income tax or are considering a multi-rate tax system.
According to the government, the exemption from personal income tax for mothers with multiple children and young people under the age of 25 is an achievement of the current Hungarian tax system, the maintenance of which he said is extremely important, though he acknowledged that opposing opinions and expectations also exist.
He added that the corporate tax rate in Hungary is also a flat rate and low, and there are public debates and conflicting ideas about this as well.
“If political groups and parties want to fulfill orders from Brussels, then the opinion that we should not talk about these issues now, but that everything will be possible after the election, is unacceptable,” Gergely Gulyás emphasized, referencing a comment the main opposition party’s MEP Zoltán Tarr made at a campaign event.
Fact
The government’s new national consultation is widely viewed as a response to the Tisza Party’s alleged tax reforms that were leaked a few weeks ago. The main opposition party has reportedly suggested replacing Hungary’s current flat-rate personal income tax system with a progressive, multi-rate system. Supporters of the change argue that higher earners should contribute more to the public budget, while critics warn it would undermine Hungary’s competitiveness, reduce disposable income for families, and threaten tax allowances such as the exemptions for mothers with multiple children and for people under 25.
