Government Pledges Continued Support for Hungarians in Transylvania

Despite the economic difficulties in Europe, the government is continuing its program to support Hungarians in Transylvania and will not allow the results achieved so far to be lost, Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stated on Friday in Odorheiu Secuiesc (Székelyudvarhely).

At the opening of the Autumn Fair, he said that in recent years, the Hungarian national government has done everything in its power to ensure that Hungarians living abroad also feel its support and, as a result, a sense of belonging.

“In order to strengthen the local economy, we have taken steps that Hungary has not been able to take in the past hundred years. This was made possible because Hungary underwent significant economic development in the 2010s, which has slowed somewhat due to the war, Covid, and other external difficulties, but in any case, we were able to generate a national economic surplus that allowed us to give much more to those beyond our borders than before,” he said.

He pointed out that this led to the implementation of an extremely serious economic program in Szeklerland as well. “If we look at the figures, we have been able to make investments worth more than HUF 300 billion (around EUR 771 million) throughout Transylvania in recent years,” he emphasized.

This is the direct investment value, and if we look at the indirect effects, we can tell you today that the local business community has implemented developments worth billions of euros with the support of the Hungarian government,”

he continued.

He then announced that nearly half of these developments took place in Harghita County, with Odorheiu Secuiesc and its surroundings occupying a very prominent place within this, so that many local businesses received funding, and Hungarian companies entering the Romanian market were also supported.

“And the fact that this took place mainly in Hungarian-populated areas means that this program serves and helps those communities where Hungarians live (…) These results speak for themselves, so it is worth continuing on the well-trodden path forward,” he said.

Levente Magyar touched on the current difficulties, the crisis in the European economy and security situation, and expressed his opinion that the continent is in a “failed geopolitical battle,” which also affects the opportunities of countries in the region.

However, despite all this, Hungary will continue what it has started. We have not stopped our support programs, and you can count on us to stand by you in economic terms in the coming period as well, and we will not let the results we achieved together in better times go to waste,”

he emphasized.

“We are preparing to continue what we have started with similar enthusiasm and momentum in the coming years, when we will be able to grow together again,” he added. “But we will not stop there. I have consulted with leaders about what development needs there are. I have consulted with company managers, and we are already working on a series of further developments that can be implemented until these difficult times hopefully pass over our heads as soon as possible,” he summarized.

Finally, the state secretary noted that the support program also stimulates trade between Hungary and Romania and encourages capital inflows, which is also in the interest of both parties.
