Minister of Prime Minister’s Office Gergely Gulyás and government spokesperson Eszter Vitályos
After the government discussed Hungary’s energy security and energy supply yesterday, Chancellor Gergely Gulyás announced during a press conference that the government had released strategic oil reserves, adding that Ukrainians could expect further countermeasures.
The government’s position is clear: what Ukraine is doing is unacceptable. Since February 6, despite the absence of technical obstacles to resuming supplies via the Druzhba pipeline, Ukraine has decided not to resume supplies, a decision that the minister described as a deliberate move that harms two EU member states, Hungary and Slovakia.
“The government has released strategic oil reserves sufficient for three months, and MOL has already ordered 500,000 tons of Russian oil to be delivered via Croatia,” Gergely Gulyás announced.
In consultation with the Slovaks, we are also considering the possibility of suspending electricity and natural gas supplies should Kiev stick to its decision to stop oil transit,”
the minister emphasized.
Responding to questions from journalists, Gergely Gulyás clarified that the Druzhba pipeline itself had not been attacked in recent months, only a storage facility near the pipeline. This did not justify a prolonged shutdown, which suggests that the decision to suspend deliveries must have been made at the highest political level.
He also pointed out that Brussels would be contacted about the Druzhba pipeline, as Ukraine was in breach of accession regulations. However, it was questionable whether Hungary would receive support from the European Commission in the current situation, the minister said.
Gergely Gulyás went on to say that the Prime Minister had flown to Washington for the founding meeting of the Board of Peace and emphasized that there was a need for an organization dedicated to peace and that the Board could play an important role in peacemaking around the world, for which there were already examples.
The goal is for peace to return to Ukraine as soon as possible, and all measures to this end must be supported. He pointed out that membership would not incur any costs for Hungary.
