Gypsy Orchestra Celebrates Anniversary with Gala Concert

The 100-member Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a gala concert on Saturday evening at the Margaret Island Open-Air Theater, where the legendary ensemble will take the stage at full strength, the theatre announced on Tuesday.

The event “will be a fitting summary of the orchestra’s four-decade-long career, during which the unique and captivating soundscape of Hungarian Gypsy music has traveled the world.”

The jubilee concert will highlight the orchestra’s most memorable moments, while also presenting new pieces.

The evening’s guest performers will be Mónika Fischl and Péter Laki.

Performing at the concert will be Lőrinc Róbert Danyi, orchestra president and violinist; József Lendvai Csócsi, principal violinist; Ferenc Lendvai, concertmaster; Gyula Csík, lead soloist; Edit Toldi, violinist; and members of the 100 Member Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra, the organizers wrote.

They recalled that

since its founding, the ensemble has given over a thousand concerts, from cultural centers in the country’s smallest villages to some of the world’s most renowned concert halls.

The organizers also noted that alongside preserving and nurturing the traditional sound, the orchestra’s repertoire reflects a musical exploration of the modern world as well. As they wrote, the ensemble, with its distinctive and unique arrangements, strives to make the works it performs as accessible and understandable as possible.
