Hungary plans to send another research astronaut, Gyula Cserényi, to the International Space Station (ISS), after our country benefited greatly economically from the previous mission, announced Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Tuesday in Washington.
The minister said that he would meet with the head of Axiom Space, an American privately funded space infrastructure developer that led the previous mission, to discuss the continuation of the Hungarian space program, as the Hungarian government is fully committed to it.
“The entire Hungarian economy benefits greatly from the Hungarian space research and space industry program (…) The Axiom mission conducted sixty scientific experiments on the International Space Station, experiments that cannot be carried out under terrestrial conditions. Twenty-five of these were carried out by the Hungarian astronaut as part of his own research program, in collaboration with Hungarian companies, research workshops, universities, and educational institutions,” he said.
Péter Szijjártó confirmed that the government’s goal is to maintain Hungary’s regional leadership position in space research, and therefore they are continuing the space program in cooperation with the United States, that he called another important milestone and area in the success story of Hungarian-American cooperation.
“When we trained Tibor Kapu, we also trained another astronaut who was his backup, and he received the same training (…)
He did not go into space, but now that we have a trained astronaut, a good American partner, scientific results, and evidence that the economy is benefiting from this, it is clear that we are in a leading regional position, hence we must continue,”
he said, referring to Gyula Cserényi.
“We are continuing the Hungarian space program. Today, we will be clarifying the details of the next possible Hungarian manned space flight with the head of Axiom Space, as the Hungarian economy has benefited greatly from the previous manned space flight and will continue to do so,” he concluded.
“Gyula Cserényi is also preparing for the International Space Station. Another research astronaut, another source of pride!” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his joy on Facebook.
Fact
The four-member crew of the Axiom-4 mission, including Tibor Kapu, spent 18 days on board the ISS in the summer of 2025. The crew conducted over sixty experiments, of which about 25 were developed in Hungary. From Hungary’s perspective, the event was of historical significance, as the country sent a human into space for the second time after 45 years. In addition, Tibor Kapu was the first Hungarian to work on board the ISS since the Interkosmos program.
