Heavy Snowfall Causes Delays at Budapest Airport

Heavy snowfall has been affecting Liszt Ferenc International Airport and the surrounding area. Several flights are awaiting a decrease in precipitation intensity for safety reasons, therefore delays or cancellations may occur in the coming hours, Budapest Airport told MTI late Tuesday evening.

The airport is currently on highest alert for snow, and Budapest Airport services are working hard to continuously clear the runways, taxiways, and aprons.

According to the announcement, in order to ensure that the airport can continue to operate safely and take off and land aircraft, runway 1 was temporarily closed a few minutes after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and snow removal efforts are focused on continuously clearing runway 2.

They added that evening traffic can be handled with one runway, and the closure of runway 1 will not cause any schedule changes.

However, due to heavy snowfall, de-icing of aircraft has slowed down, and several flights are waiting for the intensity of precipitation to decrease for safety reasons.

Some flights may be delayed or canceled in the coming hours, so passengers are asked for their patience and understanding, the statement said.

Fact

Due to the extraordinary weather conditions, incidents have also occurred at the airport. A few days ago, during the takeoff of Pegasus Airlines flight PC332 from Budapest to Istanbul, the main landing gear of the airline’s Airbus A320 aircraft was pushed off the solid pavement onto the grass by an aircraft tractor operated by the ground handling company, causing it to get stuck. No injuries were reported.
