Helping persecuted Christians could be one of the main connecting themes in Hungarian-American relations, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, responsible for programs to help persecuted Christians, said on the M1 news channel on Friday.
Tristan Azbej stressed that the Hungarian government’s hopes that the election of Donald Trump would mark the beginning of a golden age of Hungarian-American relations have come true. Talks between the new Trump administration and the Hungarian government have started at the highest levels. He pointed out that the openness, positive dialogue and common thinking were reflected in the visits of Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to Washington and New York, in the high-level ministerial meetings there, and in the Hungary Helps program, the program to help persecuted Christians, as well.
He recalled that the Hungarian government and the first Trump administration agreed that international development and aid should serve causes such as helping persecuted Christians or stopping migration by bringing aid to the ground. He reminded that
the Biden administration immediately halted Hungarian-American cooperation between USAID (United States Agency for International Development) and Hungary Helps to help persecuted Christians.
However, “now skeletons are falling out of the closet one by one” about what the US agency had supported instead.
“The support for persecuted Christians can be a key connecting theme in Hungarian-American relations,” said @Tristan_Azbej.

For example, the Biden administration has supported the spread of woke worldwide and, it has been revealed, has supported the Hungarian “left-wing propaganda press” and left-wing campaigns, in grave violation of Hungary’s sovereignty. In addition, it also supported migration and organizations promoting the “woke craze” in Hungary, the State Secretary pointed out.
This is over now, he said, stressing that his talks in Washington had resulted in a promise from the deputy administrator of the USAID, Pete Marocco, that all support against Hungary’s sovereignty would be stopped immediately.
Tristan Azbej described as fake news a report in the opposition press that the United States supported the Hungary Helps Agency during the first Trump administration, and that it was thanks to US support that the Hungarian government’s program to help persecuted Christians was launched. The Hungarian government was the first in the world to decide to help Christians suffering persecution around the world, and it was surprising, almost surreal, that the great United States, similar to Hungary Helps, would join us in supporting Christians persecuted in Iraq, he noted.
Asked whether USAID and the United States support Hungary Helps, the answer is no, the State Secretary emphasized. However, the negotiations have opened up the possibility for the United States, USAID and Hungary Helps to jointly support persecuted Christians around the world, in the Middle East and in Africa, he added.
