The investment in the Hortobágy “Bird Theater” can now begin after the project’s funding agreement was signed. A consortium led by the Hajdú-Bihar County Municipality has secured over 4.3 billion forints (11 million euros) in European Union funding for active tourism development under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Program Plus (TOP-PLUSZ), the local county municipality revealed.
The project was submitted in response to the “Development of Active Tourism” call for proposals and is being implemented through a consortium partnership. The consortium is led by the Hajdú-Bihar County Municipality, with members including the Hortobágy National Park, the Active Hungary Development Center Nonprofit Ltd., and the Ministry of Construction and Transport. The signed and now effective funding agreement ensures that the partners can work together to enhance the county’s appeal for active tourism, they added.
Zoltán Pajna, President of the Hajdú-Bihar County Assembly, emphasized: “Through this project, we will be able to offer visitors truly unique experiences that further strengthen the county’s position on both the national and international tourism map.
We are particularly excited about the development of the Bird Theater and the related infrastructure, that will make the region a truly unique attraction,”
the assembly president said.
He added that the idea for the Bird Theater, aimed at showcasing the natural values of the Hortobágy region, was conceived years ago through the collaboration of nature photographer Bence Máté, the Active Hungary Development Center Nonprofit Ltd., and the Directorate of the Hortobágy National Park.
The total eligible cost of the project exceeds 4.3 billion forints and is fully financed by the European Union. Following the signing, the parties will begin implementation of the project immediately, the statement said.
The Bird Theater will offer a unique way to present the bird and wildlife of the Hortobágy fishponds.
It will bring people closer to nature in the form of a kind of “reverse zoo”: instead of the birds being enclosed, people will enter a sunken observation room.
From behind a 16-meter-wide glass wall, almost at the same level as the water surface, visitors will be able to observe the aquatic birdlife in their natural habitat, up close, and without disturbing the animals.
