Hungarian swimming star Hubert Kós continues his success story in the USA. At the conference finals of the U.S. College Championships in Knoxville, the Olympic champion became the most successful athlete of the entire tournament and impressively underlined why he is currently one of the world’s best under the guidance of legendary coach Bob Bowman.
Hubert Kós, who competed for the University of Texas, delivered a demonstration of power in the 100-yard backstroke. In the preliminary round, he smashed Nick Thoman’s record (44.07), which had stood since 2013, with a time of 43.87 seconds. In the final, the 200-meter backstroke Olympic champion lowered the record by another hundredth of a second and secured gold with a new record.
Hubert Kós demonstrated his versatility throughout the weekend. In addition to his triumph in backstroke, he secured:
- victory in the 200-yard medley,
- second place in the 200-yard backstroke,
- and made decisive contributions to the success of the Texas relays (gold in the medley relay, bronze in the freestyle relay).
With a total of 92 points, the Hungarian swimmer won the prestigious Commissioner Cup as the best swimmer of the championships.
Hubert Kós’ Hungarian teammate, Nikolett Pádár, also showed impressive form. The 19-year-old swimmer fought a dramatic duel with Camille Spink over 200 yards freestyle. Nikolett Pádár led the field confidently until the 150-yard mark, but was beaten by four hundredths of a second in the final sprint to the finish.
Despite narrowly missing out on individual victory, the Hungarian swimmer was a key figure for her team. She contributed two gold medals in the 4×100 and 4×200 yard freestyle relays and also finished sixth in the 100 yard freestyle.
The outstanding individual performances of Hubert Kós and Nikolett Pádár led to the University of Texas winning the overall title at the U.S. College Championships in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
The Hungarian performance was rounded off by Lora Komoróczy (Auburn University), who achieved a solid result in a highly competitive field with a seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke.
