Hundreds Brave the Icy Waters of Lake Balaton in Traditional New Year’s Dip

On the first day of 2026, the beach at Szigliget was once again crowded: the bravest took a dip in Lake Balaton, while others cheered them on from the shore in thick coats. The New Year’s dip attracted a large number of participants again this year, with hundreds of bathers braving the icy water, while cheerful costumes guaranteed a great atmosphere.

The organizers treated participants to mulled wine, tea, and tasty snacks, ensuring no one went hungry or cold. Anyone could sign up for the dip, but only those who passed a medical examination on site were allowed to enter the water.

One of the highlights of the program was when the decorated pine tree that had been placed in Lake Balaton on December 24, was pulled out of the water.

Before the swim, costumed participants lined up along the shore, showcasing some truly extreme swimsuits. The funniest entries were rewarded with valuable prizes.

A DJ kept the mood lively throughout, and participation was open to everyone, with no entry fee or admission charge.

Szigliget Castle is visible from a distance, and the town is easy to reach via Route 71 along the northern shore, bordered by a row of fir trees, and by the parallel bike path. It is worth planning a visit for several days, and you can find accommodation in the apartment houses in Szigliget or in nearby Badacsony. This small town on the shores of Lake Balaton is not boring even in winter. You can conquer Szigliget Castle, go ice skating in the Castle Courtyard, or climb to the top of Csobánc if you like to hike.
