Hungarian and Slovak Presidents Meet to Strengthen Cross-Border Cooperation

The relationship between Hungary and Slovakia proves that the border between our countries does not separate us but connects us, wrote President Tamás Sulyok on his Facebook page on Wednesday after talks with the Slovak head of state.

He added that we are not only neighbors but also good partners in many areas.

“That is why we are constantly working on this – President Peter Pellegrini and I discussed cooperation between our nations,” the Hungarian president said in his post.

Peter Pellegrini echoed the same sentiment on X, writing:

“Our nations are not merely neighbours, we are steadfast partners, bound by shared interests and mutual respect. In my meeting with President Tamás Sulyok, we reaffirmed our dedication to deepening the cooperation between Hungary and Slovakia in all areas that serve the prosperity and well-being of our peoples.”

Fact

According to the latest Slovak census data from 2021, 422,065 people identified themselves as primarily Hungarian, while 34,089 did so as their second nationality—meaning that a total of 456,148 people consider themselves to be partly or entirely Hungarian in Slovakia. Slovak-Hungarian relations have often been fraught with tension in the past, mainly due to historical grievances and minority issues. In recent years, however, relations between the two countries have improved significantly: political dialogue has become regular, economic and infrastructural cooperation has strengthened, and both sides emphasize the importance of mutual respect and good neighborly relations.
