Hungarian Products Recognized at the World Cheese Awards


Hungarian artisanal and small-scale cheese makers’ products received 2 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze certifications at the World Cheese Awards, the world’s most prestigious cheese competition, the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture announced.

This year’s World Cheese Awards were held in Viseu, Portugal, with 4,786 cheeses from 47 countries, judged by 240 judges from 40 countries, including cheese experts, technologists, cheese judges, cheese traders, gastronomic journalists and chefs.

Of the 12 finalists, the cheese of the year was the Queijo de Ovelha Amanteigado, a soft sheep’s milk cheese made from raw milk with vegetable rennet, from the Portuguese cheese dairy Quinta do Pomar.

The Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture’s training program series, that ranges from basic technological training courses in Hungary to study trips to France, has also contributed to the improved results of Hungarian cheesemakers year on year, reads the press release.

The Chamber, together with the Milk Interprofessional Organization and Product Board, also supports the Hungarian Cheesemakers Association in order to develop Hungarian cheese culture and consumer awareness, they added.

Among the Hungarian entries in this year’s World Cheese Awards, Breier Farm’s ‘Pilis’ cheese and the ‘Gyergyó’ artisanal cheese from Caritas Rural Development were awarded gold certificates.

Silver and bronze certificates went to Alpokalja Cheese, Breier Farm, Csíz Cheese Dairy, Etyek Goat Cheese Manufactory, Paraszt Cheese, Pipitér Cheese Dairy, Szarvasi Agrár Zrt. and cheeses from Enikő Bodor and Attila Sárig.
