Hungarians’ Favorite Car Brand Makes No Surprise

Since the opening of the Esztergom plant in 1992, Suzuki has been mostly unchallenged in the Hungarian car market. This is confirmed by the fact that in 2024, most Hungarians chose this brand, reports Világgazdaság.

Suzuki has once again taken the lead in new car sales in Hungary, with 12.94 percent of the 121,607 cars sold last year being of this brand, according to new car sales statistics from Datahouse, the Hungarian Suzuki Zrt. announced. The company stressed that

since the start of production in Esztergom (northern Hungary), Suzuki has been the leader of the Hungarian car market for the 21st time.

The Vitara model was the most popular one, with 6,883 units sold, followed by the S-CROSS with 6,607 units sold. Of the hybrid Suzukis not made in Esztergom, the Swift sold 1,867 units last year, while the Ignis sold 302 and the Swace 71. Two fully electric Across SUVs were also purchased.

2024 also brought a significant upturn in new car sales in Hungary, as far as passenger cars are concerned, reports Autónavigátor.hu. In 2023, a total of 107,748 new passenger cars were registered in the country, which was spectacularly outperformed by the 121,607 new cars registered last year, resulting in an increase of 12.9 percent.

In the manufacturers’ race, Suzuki and Toyota have swapped places on the top and second place in the passenger car market compared to 2023, while two new entrants have also entered the top 10: Nissan finished the year in 8th place and Hyundai in 10th.

Opel has slipped down the list: the brand’s sales are increasingly affected by its French affinity, which, after German production and General Motors technology, seems to be a major deterrent for the brand’s former customers. More interestingly, for the first time in many years, Dacia is not among the top 10 brands in the sales list. The Franco-Romanian brand has been falling behind in domestic sales since they significantly increased their prices.

Looking at the total new car market including light commercial vehicles, Toyota maintained its leading position in the total Hungarian new car and light commercial vehicle market in 2024 with a historic record of 18,122 new car sales, or 12.4% market share.

The 2024 ranking was as follows:

  1. Suzuki
  2. Toyota
  3. Skoda
  4. Volkswagen
  5. Ford
  6. Kia
  7. BMW
  8. Nissan
  9. Mercedes-Benz
  10. Hyundai
