L-R: Peter Samt, President of the Federal Council of the Republic of Austria and László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly
László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly, welcomed Peter Samt, President of the Federal Council of the Republic of Austria, to his office on Wednesday. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, both presidents emphasized the close relationship between the two countries and the importance of dialogue.
László Kövér thanked the President of the Federal Council of the Republic of Austria for his visit, noting that this was already the third visit by the Austrian upper house in a short period of time, which clearly demonstrates the intensity of the relationship between the two countries.
Austria is one of Hungary’s most important partners, if not the most important, he emphasized, adding that it is the fourth largest trading partner, the second largest investor in the country, and the state with the most subsidiaries in Hungary.
The Speaker of the National Assembly said that they reviewed EU issues at the meeting and noted the problems on which they agree and those on which their positions differ.
He said that they agreed and considered it the most important message of the visit that, regardless of the extent to which their interests and positions coincide, “there is no alternative to maintaining sincere and intensive dialogue,” said László Kövér.

Austria is a good neighbor, ally, and partner to Hungary. The two countries’ centuries-long shared history provides a good foundation for them to solve current problems together and think about future prospects.
Peter Samt confirmed that the two countries enjoy extremely good relations, not only on the basis of their traditional common historical roots, but also in the current circumstances. The ties between the two countries are extremely strong, despite the fact that they hold different positions on certain EU issues.
He noted that the Republic of Austria maintains perhaps the closest relationship with Hungary among its neighboring countries.
Peter Samt emphasized that it is worthwhile to maintain and intensify the dialogue between the two countries, stressing that this is a matter of cooperation between sovereign states, in which both countries have a duty to act in the interests of their own populations.
