Hungary will once again have direct access to the sea: the Hungarian port in Trieste is being built at full speed. The project could be partially operational by 2028 and could take the competitiveness of Hungarian foreign trade to a new level.
“After more than a hundred years, Hungary is returning to the sea,” said State Secretary Levente Magyar in a status report on the construction of the Hungarian port on the Adriatic on his social media page.

The project is taking place in Trieste and is considered one of the flagship investments of Italian-Hungarian economic cooperation. The aim of the development is to create a Hungarian-controlled maritime terminal that provides direct access to global markets.
The work has entered a spectacular phase. A new quay wall is being built, while dredging is also underway. The latter is essential to ensure that ships with a greater draught will also be able to dock at the future terminal.
The development is therefore not just on paper: it is already visible in the form of physical infrastructure.
Levente Magyar also reported that during his trip to Rome, he held talks with Italian deputy ministers responsible for transport and environmental protection. The talks focused on the progress and financing of the project. The parties agreed that the work is proceeding according to schedule.
The Italian government has contributed more than HUF 20 billion to the development so far.
Meanwhile, preparations are also underway for the development of the Hungarian state-owned area. The investment is therefore being implemented through bilateral cooperation, with both parties investing significant financial and political capital in the project.

Based on reports from the government, having its own maritime terminal could significantly improve Hungary’s foreign trade flexibility. It could ensure faster, more efficient, and more independent access to global markets.
This is especially important for an export-oriented economy.
Based on current plans, partial operation could begin in 2028. This means that the terminal will already be able to receive and dispatch shipments with certain capacities, while full construction can take place in further phases.
Fact
Trieste is an important city in northeastern Italy, located at the head of the Adriatic Sea near the border with Slovenia. Its port is one of the few in the areas capable of handling cargo ships, turning it into a key gateway for Central and Eastern Europe to global markets.

The Trieste port project is not only of economic significance, but also symbolic. Hungary lost its direct access to the sea after World War I, therefore the current investment represents a historic achievement.
“We are serious about this, and we will do it – Hungary will be back at the sea!” said Magyar.
