Hungary is the European champion in the extremely fierce competition for Chinese investments. Last year, for example, more investments came to Hungary from China than to Germany, Italy, and France combined, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stated on Friday in Budapest.

After talks with Ling Ji, China’s Deputy Minister of Commerce, he emphasized that competition in Europe for investments from East Asian countries is becoming increasingly fierce, as Chinese companies are deciding on ever larger investments at a time when investment appetite in the global economy is declining.

It is clear that Hungary is the European champion, the most successful country in the competition for Chinese investments in Europe, as one-third of Chinese investments in Europe last year went to Hungary,”

he emphasized.

“This is more than the total Chinese investments in Germany, Italy, and France combined,” he continued.

He added that since the beginning of last year, 62 Chinese investments have arrived in Hungary, worth a total of EUR 17.5 billion, creating around 35,000 jobs.

Thus, after 2020, 2023, and 2024, Chinese companies have also made the most investments in Hungary in the period so far in 2025. And this is a big deal because we are winning these investments in increasingly fierce competition, in competition where our rivals are invariably Western European countries,”

he said.

Péter Szijjártó also pointed out that four of the five largest Chinese factory construction projects currently underway on the continent are linked to Hungary, and all of them are related to the modern automotive industry, thus contributing greatly to our country’s success in the new automotive era.

“In addition, we have agreed to double air traffic between Hungary and China, so the current 21 passenger flights and 21 cargo flights will increase to 42 per week. We have already begun preparations for this, so even more Chinese tourists, as well as more Chinese investments and related investment instruments, can come to Hungary,” he emphasized.

“Hungary is therefore the European champion in the increasingly fierce competition for Chinese corporate investments,” he concluded.
