Hungary Rejects EU Fines and Seeks Resolution on Migration

Minister for EU Affairs, János Bóka, stated that Hungary will not be blackmailed by the European Union and will not pay the fines imposed by the EU court for its asylum policy, reports Világgazdaság.

Following a meeting in Strasbourg with the European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee, Minister Bóka confirmed that Hungary is negotiating to resolve the issue surrounding the EUR 1M daily fine mandated by the European Court of Justice. This fine was imposed after Hungary was ordered to pay EUR 200M and EUR 1M per day for failing to comply with the Reception Conditions Directive and the Return Directive.

On September 18, the European Commission announced that Hungary had failed to pay the EUR 200M fine by the deadline, resulting in deductions from EU payments due to the country.

János Bóka stated, “we agreed on the channels for further discussions on the enforcement of the judgment. We have set up a timetable, and the discussions will continue accordingly,” emphasizing Hungary’s commitment to resolving the situation.

He further asserted that Hungary’s stance on implementing the migration judgment is rooted in the political will expressed through the referendum, national consultations, and elections.

“This is a very strong and clear mandate for us. We must continue to negotiate with the EU Commission on this basis,” he added.

During the committee meeting, Mr. Bóka presented the priorities of Hungary’s EU Council Presidency but noted that many questions focused on Hungary’s domestic political situation, which he described as an “open political attack” on Hungary and its people.
