Hungary has officially reopened its diplomatic representation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city and economic capital, signaling a renewed focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation with one of Africa’s fastest-growing nations.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, made the announcement during the ceremonial opening of the mission on Monday. He described the move not as a new beginning, but as a “correction of a past mistake,” referencing the closure of Hungary’s previous representation in the city 34 years ago.
Despite the 6,000-kilometer distance, Tanzania remains a key partner for Hungary,” Szijjártó stated. “Now is the right time to restore our physical diplomatic presence.”
In the minister’s view, the mission’s primary objective will be to accelerate the development of economic relations. Bilateral trade between the two countries has tripled over the past decade, laying solid groundwork for deeper cooperation.
Hungarian companies are showing growing interest in the Tanzanian market,” FM Szijjártó noted. “In areas where Hungary leads globally — such as water management, food safety, healthcare, and agriculture — we are ready to contribute to Tanzania’s success.”
One example is a Hungarian-led water purification project near Lake Victoria, which will provide clean drinking water to around 250,000 people. Hungarian firms are also involved in Tanzania’s higher education modernization efforts.

The reopened office will also support Hungary’s scholarship program for Tanzanian students. More than 100 Tanzanian students are currently studying in Hungary, but FM Szijjártó suggested it is time to set even more ambitious goals.
Ambitious and successful cooperation can not happen without a physical presence. That presence cannot be replaced digitally,” he said. “Reopening our representation in Dar es Salaam marks the beginning of a new and successful chapter in our bilateral relations.”
In his remarks, FM Szijjártó also warned that the world is living through an “era of dangers,” marked by ongoing wars, high levels of terrorism, and growing tendencies to sever communication channels and impose sanctions in response to crises.
He criticized these trends as signs of a return to global “bloc-based” politics — a direction he said runs counter to Hungary’s interests. Instead, Hungary advocates for cooperation based on mutual respect and shared benefits, a principle at the core of its Africa strategy.
FM Szijjártó emphasized that Africa will play a central role in shaping the future of the world, with the continent’s population expected to grow by 950 million by 2050.
We must ensure that the necessary economic, educational, and healthcare conditions are in place to allow this growing population to remain in Africa,” he said. “That requires a comprehensive and large-scale development strategy. And Hungary is ready to do its part.”
