“If there are Hungarian kindergartens, there is a future,” Says State Secretary

Opening ceremony of the Lutheran kindergarten and education center in Fogaras, Romania

Those who build kindergartens are preparing for the future, and if there are Hungarian kindergartens, then there is a Hungarian future, said Lőrinc Nacsa, State Secretary for National Policy, on Saturday at the opening of the Lutheran kindergarten and education center in Fogaras (Făgăraș), southern Transylvania.

The state secretary for national policy participated in the several-hour-long inauguration ceremony for the kindergarten and educational center of the Romanian Evangelical Lutheran Church and in the thanksgiving service held on this occasion. The building was renovated with the support of the Hungarian government as part of the Carpathian Basin Kindergarten Development Program.

In his ceremonial speech, Lőrinc Nacsa quoted Mihály Babits, who taught in Fogaras between 1908 and 1911.

He said that, like the poet, he was delighted to be there to celebrate the completion of this new joint project. The kindergarten is now ready to serve the Hungarian community in Fogaras and the surrounding area in its centuries-old mission, he said.

He emphasized that those who build kindergartens in difficult times, under the threat of war and in times of crisis, believe in the future. “We Hungarians have faith, we have hope, and we have love for one another, and this gives us the courage to build kindergartens even in difficult times,” he said.

According to State Secretary Nacsa, the renovation of the kindergarten brings the Hungarian community one step closer to prosperity in their homeland. He pointed out that this has been the most important national policy mission of the Hungarian government for 16 years.

The stakes of the April parliamentary elections are whether “this cooperation, growth, and remaining in our homeland will lead to another four years,” he said. He added that the current government offers stable and predictable national policy and care for Hungarians living abroad. “Let us work together to continue our successes and strengthen our community. We will always be there for you, just as you can always count on us,” Nacsa said.

Emphasizing the importance of mother-tongue education, he thanked the residents of the scattered settlement in Brasov County for sending their children to Hungarian kindergartens.

The modernly renovated building was consecrated by Bishop Dezső Zoltán Adorjáni, who then cut the Hungarian and Romanian national ribbons together with State Secretary Nacsa and Mayor Gheorghe Sucaciu. Representatives of sister churches also blessed the property, and the educational institution will be operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in cooperation with other historic Hungarian churches.

In Fogaras, a town with a population of 26,000, 588 people identified themselves as Hungarian in the latest Romanian census.
