Balázs Orbán in Cluj (Kolozsvár)
The Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) is committed to talent development and community building to help the Hungarian nation formulate the best national responses to global challenges – stated Balázs Orbán, Chairman of the MCC Board of Trustees and Political Director to the Prime Minister, during his speech at the MCC Transylvania academic year opening ceremony in Cluj (Kolozsvár) on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event held at MCC’s Cluj training center, Balázs Orbán emphasized that violence is on the rise in the Western world, the risk of war is increasing, and chaos and confusion are becoming more widespread. He warned that the coming period will test all nations and posed a fundamental question: how can Hungary emerge as a winner in the coming decades?
Balázs Orbán outlined five major challenges that must be addressed:
-
Defining Hungary’s place in the emerging international and economic order, maintaining sovereignty while fostering good relations with global power centers.
-
Identifying key economic sectors to build the future upon, and integrating new technologies throughout the Carpathian Basin.
-
Ensuring energy security, and leveraging all available sources to the nation’s benefit.
-
Transforming state efficiency into a competitive advantage through automation, simplification, and citizen-friendly governance.
-
Preserving national identity, as resilience cannot exist without a strong sense of self.
Across Europe, we are witnessing increasing uncertainty, as weakened community identities leave societies unable to answer fundamental questions: what holds us together, and why should we help one another in times more difficult than before? As Hungarians, we must decide whether to allow trends that erode our identity, or protect what we are rightfully proud of,”
Balázs Orbán stated.
He stressed that national answers to global problems are indeed possible, and that MCC’s mission is to help discover these through talent cultivation, community engagement, and open debate. The ultimate question, he said, is: how can individual talent and success be directed toward serving a cause greater than ourselves? If this is achieved, personal success will follow – and the Hungarian community can find itself among the winners even in a chaotic world.
Fact
Today, MCC operates in 31 locations across the Carpathian Basin, offering free education to more than 8,000 students. Its academic work is supported by six schools of study, 27 research workshops, and six institutes. In Transylvania alone, MCC has 2,600 students and 125 university fellows.
Botond Talpas, Director of MCC’s activities in Transylvania, noted that the institution was founded to foster more “self-reliant individuals” – people who not only seek personal success but also work for the good of their communities. He described MCC as the greatest intellectual and spiritual resource of the Carpathian Basin today, capable of offering localized responses to diverse challenges and of uniting communities – whether between Pécs and Cluj, or between Hungarians and Romanians in Subotica and Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc).
The event also featured a keynote lecture by Peter Turchin, a Russian-American complexity researcher and social scientist, who pioneered the interdisciplinary field of cliodynamics – the mathematical analysis of historical processes. His talk, titled “Living in an Age of Discord”, addressed the dynamics of societal conflict and transformation
