The 43rd Construma international building trade exhibition opened on Wednesday and can be visited until April 13 at the Hungexpo Budapest Congress and Exhibition Center. Speaking at the opening of the event, the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Transport, responsible for the construction industry, underlined that the construction sector has a major responsibility in sustainability.
Renáta Határ said that change is urgent because of the huge expansion of cities around the world, with cement production, which is growing by leaps and bounds, accounting for 7-8 percent of carbon emissions and, together with other construction products, well over 10 percent.
Buildings consume 40 percent of energy and the production of building materials is also a highly energy-intensive process. The environmental impact is also increased by emissions from transport, she pointed out, therefore builders should seek to buy products produced domestically or in the region.

The Deputy State Secretary said that in order to make the green transition, production and consumption habits must be changed as soon as possible to make Europe cleaner and healthier. The necessary improvements will require significant changes to the legislative environment and it is still questionable whether the EU can achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
The environmental challenges are global, hence neither Hungary nor the continent can solve them alone, and achieving sustainability goals requires international cooperation,
she stressed.

László Koji, President of the National Federation of Hungarian Building Contractors (ÉVOSZ), called 2025 the year of preparation and gathering strength in the construction industry, despite the difficulties. He believes that
housing construction and renovation can be a breakthrough point, and more public procurement for construction can help in the coming period.
Cost efficiency at company level has improved a lot in the last 2 years, he noted, adding that the next challenge could be to improve the situation at the level of the whole value chain, looking at the whole construction economy.
