“It Is Good to Be Good” Campaign Gives a Chance for a Better Life in Ukraine

Program director of Kossuth Radio, Beatrix Siklósi

The It is Good to Be Good! team visited Transcarpathia (Ukraine), where they experienced great love and solidarity, said project manager Beatrix Siklósi on Kossuth Radio’s Sunday News program, where she also reported that nearly 79 million forints (208,000 euros) had been raised in the public media campaign, which this year is helping sick, orphaned, and homeless children living in war-torn Transcarpathia with the support of the KEGYES Foundation.

The program director of Kossuth Radio said that the fate of these children in the homes is dramatic, as they often do not know what is happening to their parents, whom they sometimes do not even know, while receiving love from their caregivers and each other, which is very rare in everyday life.

Among their experiences, she mentioned, for example, the situation at the children’s home in Velikaja Dobrony (Nagydobrony), which has been operating for 30 years. It has a capacity of 40, but has already taken in 170 children, thus the bakery building and kitchen facilities had to be converted. In recent years, many of those raised here have obtained degrees and professions, and many of their lives have “turned around” because they received help here,

she added.

When the It is Good to Be Good! campaign asks listeners and viewers to try to help, it gives these children a chance to have a normal life and become healthy adults, said the project manager.

The goal is also to rebuild Transcarpathia’s first temporary home thanks to the collection, she said.

This year marks the 15th It is Good to Be Good! campaign, which is now underway in support of KEGYES, the Transcarpathian Charity Foundation for Helping “Forgotten” Children, operating in the Mukacsevo (Munkács) area, she said.

Beatrix Siklósi said that the money collected so far came from phone calls, text messages, and donations sent to the account number, and asked anyone who could to call the donation line.

The campaign also accepts donations in-kind, and some donated items are sold at auctions, she said. Ferencvárosi TC is helping again this year, its acclaimed football player Barnabás Varga’s jersey has already been sold, donated paintings are also available for purchase, Olympic, world and European champion boxer István Kovács (Kokó) has donated his New York City Marathon jersey, and there will be more surprises, she added.

Siklósi said they are proud that Hungarians living across the border, in Stuttgart, Portugal, and America, are also helping, and she said they warmly welcome Hungarian entrepreneurs as well.
