Visitors to the Saint Mauritius Monastery in Bakonybél (western Hungary) can look forward to a concert by the Italian ensemble laReverdie, a choir academy, and a book launch from Thursday to Saturday as part of the Saint Gerard Festival.
In their announcement on Monday, the organizers recalled that the event was launched in 2022, during which the performers hold open rehearsals and workshops for local communities every year.
During the workshop, which runs from Thursday to Saturday, participants can learn about the traditions of 13th- and 14th-century Italian lauda and other sacred music genres, and then the musicians participating in the workshop can perform with the laReverdie ensemble at their concert in Bakonybél on Saturday.
Founded in 1986, the repertoire of the laReverdie ensemble ranges from liturgical songs to the first examples of polyphony, from Italian and French Ars nova, to the complex French-Flemish polyphony of the Quattrocento.
Izsák Baán, artistic director of the series, said: “The saints connect: earth with heaven, people with people, distant lands with distant lands. This is also true of St. Gerard, the Benedictine monk from Venice, hermit from Bakonybél, church organizer from Csánad, and martyr from Buda. Musicians from Italy will be coming to this year’s now traditional St. Gerard celebration in Bakonybél, inviting everyone to a meeting with medieval music from northern Italy, the spirit of Gerard, and one of the highest-quality ensembles of early music in Italy.”
The highlight of this year’s festival will be the publication of a photo album depicting the life of the Bakonybél monastery, which cultivates the spirit of Gerard, who sought God in quiet solitude. The album, entitled Csönd Neked – Szavak és csend határán egy bencés monostorban (Silence for You – On the Border Between Words and Silence in a Benedictine Monastery), with text by Benedictine Oblate Zakariás Hidas and photos by Gergely Máté Oláh, will be presented on Saturday by artist László Hegyeshalmi.
The program, supported by the National Cultural Fund, is free to attend.
