A long-awaited upgrade project is about to be realized at the Hercegszántó-Backi Breg (Béreg) border crossing on the Main Road 51. Once the permit plans are updated, construction can begin and the road will be opened to vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons at the Serbian-Hungarian border, Magyar Építők reports.
Currently, the majority of the crossing points on the Hungarian-Serbian border (except for Tompa, Röszke and Hercegszántó) only open to traffic at certain times. However, border crossing for freight vehicles is only possible in Tompa, Röszke and Udvar, and the use of the latter crossing point means a significant detour for Hungarian-Serbian freight traffic.
The project will be implemented on the exit and entry side of the Hercegszántó-Backi Breg crossing, for a distance of just under 383 meters, while ensuring the flow of traffic.
According to the contract notice published in the EU public procurement TED (Tenders Electronic Daily), 2×2 freight lanes and the same number of bus lanes will be built on both the exit and entry sides. There will be 2×4 control lanes for cars, and the project also includes the construction of pedestrian and cyclist zones. The project includes the construction of a parking area for 40 trucks on the exit side and 42 on the entry side.
The development will also enable the border crossing to provide barrier-free passage for oversized vehicles.
According to the notice, a car park with seventy spaces for passenger vehicles will also be created. Concrete and asphalt pavements will be renewed over some 44,530 square meters. The company winning the tender will be responsible for the construction of 53,000 cubic meters of earthworks and 3,453 square meters of buildings.
The contractor’s tasks will include the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of the new head office and toll service buildings. There will also be a station for continuous axle weight and total weight measurement on both sides of the crossing. In addition, the contractor will construct a customs goods control building, as well as a terminal for buses.
