A themed family day will be held on February 28 at Buda Castle on the anniversary of King Matthias’s birth, where the era of Matthias Hunyadi will be commemorated with a medieval fair, traditional performances, and museum adventure games, among other events.
The past will return for a day at the Castle Museum of the Budapest History Museum, where the large-scale family-themed day entitled “Let us Celebrate King Matthias!” will be held again this year.
The program, linked to the anniversary of King Matthias’s birth, offers experiences for all ages, including themed guided tours, educational presentations, and object demonstrations.
Fact
Matthias I (born Matthias Hunyadi, commonly known as King Matthias, Cluj, February 23, 1443 – Vienna, April 6, 1490) was King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458, King of Bohemia from 1469, and Archduke of Austria from 1486 until his death. He is also commonly known as Matthias Corvinus or Matthias the Just. A major achievement of his domestic policy was that, as an elected king struggling with legitimacy issues, he managed to consolidate his power. He took almost every opportunity afforded to him by the powers of a medieval ruler. He masterfully handled contemporary social communication and sought to promote his own reputation both at home and abroad in order to gain support for his political goals.
One of the main themes will be the astrological predictions that were significant for King Matthias, but visitors will also be able to learn about medieval gastronomy and the motifs of the characteristic majolica floors of Buda Castle.
The organizers are preparing a historical craft fair in the Baroque Hall, where visitors can learn how to make authentic handicrafts from traditional masters.
The Mathias Rex Historical Preservation Society will present the camp life of mercenary troops during the reign of Matthias, while the Military History Museum will offer visitors an interactive introduction to the weapons and knightly culture of the Matthias era.
There will also be a knights’ castle-building game demonstration and a creative workshop, where the stars of the Milky Way will be the focus of the activities.
At the Musica Historica concert, visitors can hear secular and sacred music from the time of King Matthias in the second half of the 15th century, and there will also be several themed guided tours for those interested in learning about medieval astrology and the gastronomy of the period.
Tickets are available at a discounted price until February 21.
