The BalatonBike365 cycling network has been extended by an additional 110 kilometers in the eastern basin of Lake Balaton, further enhancing the region’s year-round appeal for active tourism.
The expansion was announced on Tuesday by Péter Princzinger, President of the Hungarian Tourism Association Foundation (MTSZA), at a press conference held to inaugurate the new segments.
Péter Princzinger recalled that the BalatonBike365 project, launched in 2018, aims to make the Lake Balaton region attractive in all four seasons, while also promoting cycling tourism beyond the lakeshore, reaching into more remote destinations.
To date, the initiative has developed:
-
1,000 km of marked cycling trails
-
75 themed cycling tours
-
145 rest stops
-
5 bike ports offering full services in Balatonfüred, Balatonszárszó, Keszthely, Kapolcs, and Badacsony
-
100 trained tour guides
-
Plus, cyclists now have access to a pocket-sized printed map for easy navigation.
In Péter Princzinger’s view, the newly added 110 kilometers of routes were specifically designed to run on low-traffic public roads, well-maintained dirt roads, and dedicated bike paths. The new routes intentionally avoid steep inclines, ensuring a comfortable and safe cycling experience for all skill levels.
The expansion connects 13 towns and 20 tourist attractions, including:
-
Feind Winery (host of the press event)
-
Balaton Park Circuit in Balatonfőkajár, a MotoGP venue
-
The Nádasdy Castle in Nádasdladány
Navigation on the new trails is supported by 300 newly installed signs.
Zsanett Oláh, CEO of the National Heritage Development Nonprofit Ltd., spoke about the cultural and heritage aspects of the project.
She emphasized that the expansion strengthens the link between active tourism and cultural heritage, giving cyclists the chance to visit landmarks like Nádasdy Castle, a standout architectural and historical site in the region.
The freedom of cycling combined with the experience of exploring our castles opens a new dimension in tourism around Lake Balaton,”
Oláh said.
Also attending the event was Jonatán Vadnai, Olympic sailor and VisitBalaton365 ambassador, who praised the development. He shared that he frequently cycles in the Balaton Uplands as a complementary sport to sailing and welcomed the growing infrastructure.
I cycle a lot around the Balaton Highlands, so I am really pleased to see the network expanding,”
he said.
The BalatonBike365 project continues to reshape the region’s tourism landscape, making it more accessible, diverse, and attractive for both domestic and international visitors — on two wheels or otherwise.
