Lake Balaton Is a Constantly Renewing, Strong Region, Says Minister

The Lake Balaton region is a constantly renewing, strong area, and while it used to be characterized by seasonal interest, today this interest extends throughout the entire year, said the Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development on Thursday in Balatonfüred.

At the award ceremony held to announce the results of the Balaton House of the Year 2025 architectural competition, Tibor Navracsics emphasized that Lake Balaton is not only a resort, but also home to hundreds of thousands of people who want to spend their daily lives in a livable environment. With this in mind, the region must be developed, to which “the competition gives a new identity,” as does the fact that a chief architect for Lake Balaton has been appointed in the region, he added.

Regő Lánszki, State Secretary for Architecture at the Ministry of Construction and Transport, said: “The future of Lake Balaton depends on responsible decisions” … “That is why we have reinforced the regional approach with the aim of creating a livable environment around Lake Balaton.”

He added that Lake Balaton is part of our shared memory, a natural treasure, a cultural space and a built environment all at once. The lake’s environment requires conscious, consistent work, where there is no place for solutions that are alien to the landscape, which were previously implemented at the expense of quality. In contrast, a conscious regional approach serves the future of Lake Balaton, he added.

István Bóka (Fidesz-KDNP), mayor of Balatonfüred, emphasized that the aim of the Balaton House of the Year 2025 architectural competition is to draw attention to the architecture of Lake Balaton. As a result, numerous buildings in the city have been renovated.

Barbara Hegedűs, Member of Parliament (Fidesz), emphasized that culture, art, and architecture form a unity in the region. As she said, it is our shared responsibility to preserve our cultural heritage.

The buildings will become lively homes and community spaces that serve the everyday needs of the people who live here, she added.

Róbert Pali, one of the organizers of the competition and president of the Balaton Association, emphasized that the success of the competition was due to the cooperation between civilians, associations, the architectural profession, and the government.

Twenty-one entries were submitted for the Lake Balaton House of the Year 2025 competition, eight of which were awarded prizes by the committee, including residential buildings, holiday homes and public buildings.

The award ceremony was organized by the Women for Lake Balaton Association and the Association of Local Municipalities of Lake Balaton.
